On the evening of January 27th, the fourth lecture of HUST CI-UFMG Online Camp: Contemporary China was held successfully. Associate Prof. Qiu Huifang, from School of Economics at HUST, was invited to give a lecture on “FDI in China: A General Review and Evaluation”. It was presided over by Cheng Jin, Vice Dean of Confucius Institute at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays an important role in both Chinese Reform and Opening-up policy and comprehensive opening stage. Since 1978, in full use of foreign investment strategy, and non-stop promotion of policies, management system and environments for foreign investment, China has attracted greater foreign investments globally for consecutive years. In this context, how has FDI developed in China? What kind of forms does FDI have? What' s the future of FDI in China? Associate Prof. Qiu expounded the history and current situation of FDI in China for Brazilian students through vivid cases and ample data.

Associate Prof. Qiu introduced the background of FDI as a part of Reform and Opening-up policy. Associate Prof. Qiu explained specific policies of Reform and Opening-up to show the economic developmentdifferences between town and city in China before and after 1978. She stressed that internal reform and external opening are interconnected, and this policy has been conducted step by step. Associate Prof. Qiu divided the development of FDI into four stages---starting stage (1978-1991), rapid development stage (1992-2000), advanced opening stage (2001-2012), and comprehensive opening stage (2013-). Considering Brazilian students' better understanding of joint venture, contractual joint venture, and sole proprietorship, she demonstrated cases how Coca Cola, KFC and Volkswagen entered Chinese market. Associate Prof. Qiu concluded that Reform and Opening-up policy has realized great achievements and FDI has contributed to China's economic miracle directly and in directly, which can be seen from statistics in national economy and life of common people. She believed China would not shut the door to outside and would continue to provide favorable conditions for FDI.

In Q&A, Associate Prof. Qiu answered questions proposed by Brazilian students professionally and recommended two videos of FDI in Hubei Province and Wuhan City to them.
